Sue Henderson is an award-winning artist and photographer in Fredericksburg,
Virginia most known for fluid yupo watercolors and global photography.  Her
work has appeared in select solo and group exhibitions and she continues to
work regularly on new pieces.

I grew up wanting to be creative.  However, my love for music and art took
a different direction in the name of stability!   I joined the Air Force and
became a Master Electrical Systems instructor for four years.  Then I let
the VA send me back to college to get an AA in Music and a BA in Liberal
Arts.  I worked as an Entertainment and Recreation specialist for the
Department of Defense for almost 15 years while living in England, Italy and
Holland while my husband was stationed there.  Along the way we raised two
great kids who’ve now given us EIGHT delightful grandchildren.

During all those years, I was a performing artist singing in almost every
conceivable venue.  I volunteered as a radio morning DJ for Armed Forces
Radio Network.  I toured around handling logistics for many stars visiting
military installations overseas.  And I sang.  In churches.  In a punk rock
group (it was the 80’s!).  In a folk duo and then trio.  As a musical
theatre performer including a couple years with the Cambridge (UK) Regional
Orchestra.  And I learned directing.  Straight plays, comedy, some classics,
musicals.  And I loved every minute of it.

When we finally moved back to the US, we took a motor home and toured around
the country for almost six months seeing friends and family we’d not seen in
a long time and trying to sort out where we’d like to live.  And we
ultimately landed in beautiful Fredericksburg, VA where I began work as a
community recreator for King George County.

I rediscovered my love for performing through the local dinner theater and
decided I was ready to go back to my first love of acting and singing and
all things creative.  I left full time employment in 2000 as a leap of faith
and have been continually rewarded ever since.

I spent 5 years organizing and running events for
Historic Fredericksburg
Foundation on a part-time basis and got back into performing as much as
possible.  I continue working on special events as a free-lance organizer
but I’ve now dedicated as much time as I can to performing and painting.
I am a contracted Vocal Director for a major cruise line which feeds my love
of travel and allows me to give back and mentor to younger performers.  And
while I’m on the road, I’ve rediscovered my love for photography and
painting.

When I create art – in all it’s forms – I am reminded of our capacity for
imagination.  When do most of us lose those inhibitions and become incapable
of different perspectives?  My art requires abandonment and I continually
look to stretch the boundaries of both mine and other’s expectations.  I
hope my visual and performing arts inspire and bring new ideas to all
who see and hear them.

I am mostly self-taught as a fine artist.  I am inspired by the natural
world and the various cultures I’m honored to have experienced.  I’m
grateful for the many teachers, both formal and informal, friends, and
artists who have shared themselves along my journey.
